West Stanly High School Celebrates New Building

Tuesday, October 21st 2003 - Albemarle, NC - West Stanly HIgh School and local sponsors held a dedication ceremony to celebrate the completion of the new Bank of Stanly Agricultural Learning Center.

The center has been in use since the beginning of the school year and students, participating in a recent NC State Fair, have already won several major awards including Supreme Champion Ewe and Grand Champion Market Lamb. This marks the first time that a single North Carolina group has been awarded both of these awards. West Stanly High School's principal, Bud Smith, said "the learning center gives students, in the program, more reasons to take pride in their work. It gives them a little ownership and a place, on campus, they can be proud of. It's obvious that people in the community are interested in enhancing the students experience and learning opportunities."

"The agricultural program already had a lot of credibility, but without that facility, we could not have expanded our curriculum", said Ken Edwards, director of the local school system's vocational education.

The 40 by 92 foot building includes a classroom/community meeting room, restrooms and stables for housing and caring for live animals. Up to 14 lambs have lived in the center since August. Students also have the opportunity to work with a range of other animals including horses and poultry.

Bill Lawhon, President & CEO of Bank of Stanly said "Our company and its associates are honored to have such a nice facility named on behalf of Bank of Stanly. Our company is very aware of what education means to our community and what this program along with the leadership of Michael Alexander can do for this community. This new building will allow students from all over our county to experience a unique learning experience while developing life skills that will benefit their lives and our community."

By working together, we can continue to enhance the well being of the counties we serve and make a difference in our community.
